In the modified Encke's method, the choice of a suitable reference orbit is a key step. The available reference orbits for long arc orbit determination of artificial satellites require rectification section by section, which adds to the complexity of the computation. In this paper we investigate how to select a suitable reference orbit and reduce the number of rectifications.
