The relations between the periodic cratering events in the geologic past, mass extinction, and the secular variations of the earth rotation. A statistical relation E = a + b logD is established between the extinction intensity E of major extinctions and the crater diameter D. Using the records of the impact crater which occurred in different geological epochs, a 27.8-Myr cyclicity is obtained from the time-series analysis weighted by the characteristic quantity E. The data of paleontologic clocks within the past 100 Myr are analyzed. After eliminating the tidal evolutional trend, the analytical results indicate that the secular variation of the earth rotation has a 30-Myr cyclicity. A maximum cross-correlation coefficient between the two time series is determined. These results suggest that the impact cratering is the cause of the secular variation of the earth.
