Aspects of image formation in cases involving the effect of the gravitational field of a galaxy are considered, taking into account a quasar at a great distance and a galaxy located between earth and the quasar. The considered phenomenon is based on the deflection of light by gravity, as predicted by Einstein (1916). The light emitted by the quasar can reach the observer along several different paths, and the observer sees several images of the quasar. Chang and Refsdal (1979) have shown that stars which are located in the 'lens galaxy' near the path of the light can have a considerable influence on the lens effect. Thus, large changes in image brightness are possible. Numerical simulations show that these stellar effects (microlensing) can have a great importance for astrophysics. Attention is given to critical curves and the number of microimages, the considered objects, the apparent chromatic effect, and velocity determinations.
