The importance of appropriate selection of the telescope beam size in measurements of the Zeldovich-Sunyaev (1969) effect is demonstrated by convolution of a Gaussian beam with the gas temperature and density profiles. Observational data are used to establish the parameters characterizing the polytropic gas models. The degree of beam dilution can possibly be very large, and consequences for measurements of the most likely clusters along whose lines of sight the effect is claimed to have been detected are discussed. A recent measurement of the relative temperature change along a line-of-sight to the double quasar 1146+111 B, C, is considered.
