A physical interpretation of the blackbody bump observed in the spectra of cosmic rays from distant metagalactic sources is given. It is shown that the blackbody hump is significant for distant sources and for flat generation spectra, since in both cases the number of particles subjected to significant deceleration is large. The blackbody trough is not as pronounced in homogeneous metagalactic models, since nearby sources make a contribution together with distant sources in these models.
