Instrumentation on Mauna Kea has been used to record H-alpha emitting filaments in the Crab nebula at subarcsecond resolution. Sample images are provided to demonstrate that the filaments have formed into chains of knots. The images, which suggest that the knots have been displaced outwards from a low-density filament in which they were originally embedded, are concluded to contain information on the small-scale distribution and properties of hot thermal plasma and the magnetic field around the filaments. The goals of future observational campaigns of the same types of features are outlined.
