CCD measurements of 11 RR Lyrae variables and a standard sequence near NGC 6522 are used to recalibrate photographic photometry of the RR Lyrae variables in Baade's window and then to determine the distance to the galactic centre, which is found to be R0 = 8.1±0.4 kpc if = 0.6. The data tend to deny the existence of an absolute magnitude-metallicity relation for RR Lyrae stars. The colours of the RR Lyrae variables, together with other reddening indicators, imply that AV = 1.78±0.10, rather larger than usually assumed. A colour-magnitude diagram for the giant branch of NGC 6522 is consistent with the cluster being moderately metal poor and at approximately the same distance as the galactic centre. At least some of the RR Lyrae variables adjacent to the cluster are likely to be members.
