Trajectories are computed for different heights in a stratospheric winter vortex, displaced from the pole by a developing warming.
It is shown that horizontal mixing and height-dependent vertical motions at the edge of the vortex will cause notches in originally undisturbed profiles of source gases.
During the CHEOPS-campaigns over Northern Scandinavia such profiles were measured and are compared with the computed backward trajectories.
