UBV observations of NQ Vul (1976) are presented and the general behaviour of this nova and four others, V 1500 Cyg, HR Del, FH Ser, and LV Vul in the U-B, B-V diagram are studied. The paths of all novae, from the very fast to the very slow, are found to be remarkably similar and to correlate well with definite stages of nova evolution. The primary maximum is defined as the time of lowest temperature and largest radius of the quasi-photosphere in visual light. The absolute magnitudes at maximum and minimum and the distance of NQ Vul are determined. Using the two-colour method, the absolute magnitude at maximum and the distance of Nova Doradus 1971a are revised.
