The Roentgensatellit (ROSAT) X-ray astronomy project is described in general terms, from its beginning to the time of writing, about two years before launch. A summary of the mission objectives, the instrumentation, and the planned observations is presented with emphasis on the British telescope, designated the 'Wide Field Camera' (WFC), which will make the first all-sky survey at XUV wavelengths from 60 to 300 A. In the context of the mission as a whole, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory's contribution to the development of the WFC and the role of the laboratory in coordinating the Science and Engineering Research Council interfaces to the ROSAT project are identified.
