Two-micron spectroscopy of L1551 IRS 5 is presented. The main result is the presence of strong absorption in the first-overtone bands of CO. From the equivalent width of the CO bands, a spectral type of K2 III is derived. The CO bands and marginal evidence for H2O vapor absorption provide additional evidence that IRS 5 may be a member of the FU Ori class of pre-main-sequence stars. Emission lines of H2 are detected, suggesting the presence of shocked molecular gas in the vicinity of IRS 5. A marginal detection of the hydrogen Br-gamma line was also made. The measured flux limit for Br-gamma and the 6-cm radio continuum flux are consistent with optically thin recombination and not with an optically thick wind.
