Multi-epoch spectral-line VLBI measurements of H2O maser proper motions have provided kinematic information in several regions of recent star formation on unprecedented spatial scales. Recently, the first measurements of OH maser proper motions have been made in the source W3(OH), and these have provided detailed information about the distribution of the magnetic field strength on fine spatial scales, in addition to the usual three-dimensional kinematics probed by H2O masers. On a two-dimensional map of the source, the measured field strengths show large variations over small distances, with no apparent pattern. I present here a regularity in the magnetic field distribution for some of the spots that takes the form of a strong correlation of field strength with maser spot z-velocity. This correlation constitutes progress towards a simple understanding of the magnetic field distribution, and might be useful as an additional constraint on the kinematic modelling of maser-emitting sources.
