A method for the passive mapping of the earth in the microwave region is discussed which uses the interference pattern created by the correlation of the signals from two radiometers mounted in moving satellites. It is shown that the signal-to-background ratio can be reduced to a minimum level which is determined by the created fringe spacing, which itself is a function of satellite spacing. The signal-to-background ratio is enhanced by a mechanism of defocusing of the interferometric radiometer which suppresses background noise surrounding the target. Near field viewing in the Fresnel region is found to permit the determination of cross range and range via measurement of the difference in the radii of curvature of the impinging wave front at the different vantage points of the two detectors.
