The results of the first decade of the searches for flashing optical counterparts to gamma-ray burst sources are summarized and discussed. We discuss the question of the existence of optical transients in general and outline the progress achieved in optical searches for gamma-ray burst sources. It is shown tha the first decade of these searches has not led to any definitive conclusion: the existence of optical transients related to gamma-ray bursts still remains questionable.
