Binaries: Spectroscopic
Scientific paper
Interferometric and spectroscopic observations are presented for three bright speckle-spectroscopic binaries with giant components: HR 233, 36 Tau, and 73 Leo. All of these systems were first resolved interferometrically at the KPNO 3.8-m telescope about 15 years ago, having discovery designations of McA 2, 13 Aa, and 35, respectively. However, the determination of accurate orbital elements is only possible because complete coverage had been obtained spectroscopically. Presented here for the first time are astrometric elements for two of these systems: 36 Tau and 73 Leo, and the first realistic astrometric elements for HR 233 following the correction of the quadrant errors that vitiated previous orbital analyses (Balega & Balega 1988, SVAL, 14, 393; Baize 1988, A&AS, 74, 507). The orbital periods, eccentricities, and semi-major axes are: HR 233 (5y.73, 0.534, 0′′:034); 36 Tau 7y.94, 0′′.683, 0029); and 73 Leo (8y.11, 0.412, 0′′:046). Also for the first time we present spectroscopy of the individual stars in HR 233 and 36 Tau. The dependable spectral classifications and luminosity ratios provide good indications of the distances of these systems, viz. 174 pc (HR 233), 220-280 pc (36 Tau), and 135-150 pc (73 Leo). All of these systems have expected parallaxes (based on spectral types) approaching 10 milliarcseconds, and accurate distance determinations will allow the masses to be calculated.
