Photometric and spectroscopic observations of XY UMa, the highly variable RS CVn system are presented. Radial velocities of the primary, systemic velocity and RV semi-amplitudes of the primary and secondary components are derived. Method developed for detecting faint secondaries in the low signal-to-noise spectra is described. Transient absorption features drifting across the H alpha line were observed suggesting existence of the corotating clouds in the system. Derived mass (1.07 Modot) and radius (1.13 Rodot) of the primary may indicate that the star is slightly earlier spectral type than previously believed and is embedded in the dusty envelope.
