After years of quiescence, SGR 1900+14 entered a remarkable phase of activity during the summer of 1998. This activity peaked on 1998 August 27 when a giant flare resembling the famous March 5() th event from SGR 0526--66 was recorded. Two days later, a much dimmer, but still very luminous (8 x 10(40) ergs sec(-1) ) burst was detected simultaneously with the Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). Unlike typically short soft gamma repeater (SGR) bursts ( ~ 0.1 sec), this event persisted for ~ 3.5 sec. The burst was preceded by a soft pre-cursor, and followed by a long ( ~ 10(3) sec) X-ray tail modulated at the 5.16 sec stellar rotation period. Despite a difference in peak flux of ~ 250 between this burst and the August 27() th flare, we find a number of similarities between these events. There is a clear distinction between the burst spectrum and the relatively softer tail spectrum. In addition, the spectrum during the burst peak did not vary whereas hard-to-soft spectral evolution was observed during the tail. We discuss the spectral and temporal signatures evident during this event and present an interpretation of the spectral evolution in the context of the magnetar model of SGR bursts.
