We are currently undertaking a large project (COLA, for Compact Objects in Low-powered AGN) with the aim of addressing several key questions concerning the relationship between AGN (which will be identified in our program by VLBI radio cores) and their host galaxies. We have defined a large all-sky sample of 217 galaxies which includes all galaxies from the IRAS point source catalog with a 60mu m flux > 4Jy, that have velocities in the range 3500-7000 kms(-1) . We use CO, HI and I-band luminosities to construct two sub-samples of ~ 60 non-AGN galaxies that match the global properites of the ~ 60 AGN galaxies we expect from our sample. These sub-samples will then be used in a series of multi-wavelength observations to explore the relationship between radio cores and their host galaxies. In this presentation we discuss the results of optical I-band imaging, 6cm VLA A array mapping and CO 1->0 spectra for the approximately half the galaxies in the northern half of the COLA sample and in particular particularly analyse the possible connections between radio structures and molecular gas content. We also compare our results with previous HI results to indicate how components of the interstellar medium (ISM) change their ratios as a function of core activity.
