The morphology of the Olympus Mons on Mars is reviewed, and the faulting of the Tharsis Dome is described. The parallel orientation of structures on and around Olympus Mons demonstrates the influence of the basement on the volcanic morphology, as is the case on earth. Fractures in the basement have probably guided the ascension of magma morphology. Basement subsidence due to increasing volcanic load accounts for structures on and around the volcano which trend NW-SE, NE-SW, and N-S.
