The cross section formula for heavy ions, derived from the barrier penetration model of Wong (1973) was extrapolated to the low-energy region, and was used to calculate CNO fusion rates for the temperature range T9 = 0.1 to about 5.0 (where T9 = T/10 exp 9 K). The fusion rates obtained for the C-12 + C-12, O-16 + O-16, and C-12 + O-16 reactions were found to be significantly lower than those obtained by Caughlan et al. (1985). It is noted that the new results will affect the calculations of stellar evolution, supernova explosions, and element synthesis.
