We analyze images of BIMA 12CO (J=1-0), VLA HI, and Spitzer 3.6 and 24 μm emission toward the edge-on galaxy NGC 891 and derive the radial and vertical distributions of gas and the radial distributions of stellar mass and recent star formation. We show how the ratio of molecular to atomic gas varies with galactocentric radius and with vertical displacement from the midplane. In addition, we examine whether the hydrostatic pressure model can account for the variations in the ratio. The midplane pressure P0(r) shows a power law relationship (exponent ˜ 0.88) with the H2 to HI surface density ratio. On the other hand, while the gas pressure in two dimensions P(r,z) seems to correlate with the ρ(H2)/ρ(HI) ratio near the midplane, there is no clear relationship between the two quantities at high z. We measure the star formation rate (SFR) and efficiency (SFE) as a function of radius and find a strong correlation between Σ(SFR) and Σ(H2). We test the importance of gravitational instability in determining the sites of massive star formation, but find poor agreement with the data when a constant stellar scaleheight is assumed.
