Scientific paper

It is pointed out that molecular spectroscopy has become an important tool for the study of the cold gaseous component of interstellar matter. The importance of this new field of investigation for astronomical science is considered, giving attention to the basic points of interest. The characteristics of molecular spectra in the radio frequency range are discussed together with the significance of these spectra for astronomical investigations. Molecular clouds and their physical properties are examined along with the occurrence of maser emission in interstellar space and questions of the formation and destruction of interstellar molecules.
