Celestial X-ray sources are characterized by the time variability observed in their luminosity. The source intensity versus time profile observed at low X-ray energy (few keV range), where the flux is high enough for a comfortable counting rate at the detector, is used as a valuable tool for the contemporary detection and identification of the source at higher energies where the luminosity could be too low to allow a significant analysis on its own. Information on the source emission mechanism is derived from a knowledge of the time correlation of the fluxes detected in different energy ranges. The feasibility of utilizing the COS-B X-ray detector to establish the reference time profile for the source analysis at various gamma energies is examined. X-ray sources which could become target sources for the COS-B mission are analyzed.
