The ultraviolet spectrum of beta Lyrae observed with the S 2/68 experiment aboard the TD 1 satellite has been compared with the spectra of several standard stars and with theoretical models. These results, together with those obtained by Copernicus telescope (OAO-3) show that the spectrum of beta Lyrae is characterized by strong emission lines at wavelengths less than or equal to 2300 A and by absorption lines at wavelengths greater than 2300 A. The energy distribution is similar to that of a B 8 star, and the effective temperature of the models which best fit the observed energy curve is 11,000 K.
