The interaction of plane parallel Alfven waves with a fast parallel shock wave is considered. The change of the wave's magnetic and cross-helicity state in this interaction is calculated. It is demonstrated that, even for degenerate upstream cross helicity states Hc = +/- 1, the downstream cross helicity state is always different from +/- 1, making downstream stochastic second order Fermi acceleration unavoidable. The acceleration time scale for second order Fermi acceleration is shown to be comparable with the time scale for acceleration by multiple shock crossings of the particles for a wide range of shock wave's compression ratios and Mach numbers.
