In the framework of the accretion disc model of AGN we determine the flux received by the disc due to the radiation of a central X-ray source scattered by a hot surrounding medium. We then compute some characteristics of the line spectrum emitted by the disc and compare them to the statistical properties observed in a sample of AGN spectra. We conclude that observations are consistent with the accretion disc model provided that the density of the halo is proportional to R exp -1/2.
