Methods of numerical evolutionary models of starbursts are presented as well as results of fitting the models to the available data of the M 82 starburst. The methods presented are better suited for rapidly evolving stellar populations than the classical evolutionary methods. Detailed fits to observed data are possible by varying fundamental parameters of initial mass function and star formation rate history. Model results include luminosities, colors, emission line ratios, spectral indices, spectra in the visible wavelength range, and nucleosynthesis. Models were fitted to the wide range of data available for the starburst in the central region of M 82. A consistent model for all data requires the starburst to have been active for 10-15 million years, with an initial mass function biased toward massive stars, as compared to the solar neighborhood. This IMF bias may be due either to a different IMF slope or a suppression of low mass stars.
