Much use is made in helioseismology of the optimally localized averages method of inversion, introduced by Backus and Gilbert. However, the method is computationally expensive for large data sets. Here we present a class of alternative formulations of that method which are more efficient computationally and yet they retain the advantages of the method in its usual form.
