The absolute motion of the Galaxy is discussed, summarizing the results of recent observational and theoretical investigations. The discoveries made about Galactic motion since 1900 are surveyed chronologically, and the theoretical principles involved are explained in detail. The most recent observations are shown to indicate motion of the Local Group and the Vir cluster in the direction of the Hya-Cen supercluster, which is itself moving toward a large concentration of galaxies (the so-called Great Attractor) at about twice the distance to Hya-Cen. Extensive drawings, diagrams, and sample images are provided.
