A method for determining the concentration and distribution of hydrogen in the outer layers of SN 1987A is proposed. The method uses data on the H-beta profile and on the flux of hard X-rays and gamma-rays at a late stage of evolution (t greater than about 200 days). Estimates of the hydrogen concentration and gradient at a level corresponding to an expansion velocity of 5000 km/s are obtained. These values are in agreement with predicted gasdynamic models of SN 1987A with an envelope mass of 11-15 solar masses and a kinetic energy of 1.3 x 10 to the 51 erg.
