The emergence of a shock wave from the surface of a massive compact star
is shown to result in a short pulse of a soft X-ray and hard ultraviolet
radiation of total energy about ≡1047ergs. Numerical
evaluations of maximum temperature and velocity acquired by outermost
layers of the star in the case of SN 1987A are presented.
