Fifty years ago this week, Latimeria chalumnae was discovered, the only
living representative of the otherwise extinct coelacanth fishes. Half a
century of research shows it is not the hoped for missing link between
fish and land vertebrates and there are now fears that it too will
become extinct before its centenary.
