The authors present optical spectra of the two broad absorption line (BAL) QSOs Q1246-057 and Q1309-056 obtained at three different epochs separated by 2 - 7 yr. The data have been used to search for variability in the troughs of the QSOs. The authors find that statistically significant variations have occurred in the Si IV and C IV troughs of Q1246-057. They suggest these changes are associated with ionization variations driven by continuum fluctuations. The authors discuss the use of photoionization models to place limits on parameters within the BAL clouds in the light of these variations.
