It is pointed out that the universe contains structures of differing size. The most conspicuous structures are the galaxies, which are gigantic islands consisting of gas and stars. However, galaxies do not have any uniform characteristics, and their size may vary greatly. The galaxies do not represent the largest structures which are currently known. A number of galaxies form a group. One group may just contain a few member galaxies, or it may form a gigantic cluster of galaxies. Very large structures with connections between different clusters of galaxies are called 'superclusters'. Attention is given to a novel building block concept of the universe which is characterized by very extended (100-150 Mpc), but uniform, structures. The origin and development of such structures is considered, taking into account the local supercluster, the Coma supercluster, and the Perseus supercluster.
