A discussion of the current understanding of the gravitational-lens phenomenon is presented. The historical background (Lodge, 1919; Eddington, 1920; Einstein, 1935; Tikhov, 1938) of investigations of this phenomenon is reviewed, and the nature and functioning of a gravitational lens are described. The difficulties involved in the detection of gravitational lenses are discussed. Finally, the events leading up to the successful detection of a gravitational lens (Walsh et al., 1979) are described, along with the development of detailed models of the gravitational-lens effect (Young et al., 1981).
