In infrared astronomical investigations conducted with the aid of balloons outside the atmosphere, the radiation is detected with helium cooled bolometers and the spectral band is selected by making use of the reststrahlen reflection of halogenide crystals in the same cryostat. The high reflectivity in the reststrahlen band makes it possible to employ multiple reflection filters. Techniques for narrow band filtering are discussed, giving attention to the preparation of Fabry-Perot type filters of metallic mesh.
