A general qualitative review of black hole theory is presented. Collapse of a star to its gravitational (Schwarzschild) radius is described, and values of the gravitational radius are computed for the sun, the earth, and a neutron star. Explicit definitions are given for the event horizon, static limit, irreducible mass, and ergosphere of a black hole as well as for the concept of a space-time singularity. The energetic processes and characteristics of rotating and nonrotating black holes are discussed, and energy extraction mechanisms are described, including deflection of a particle through the ergosphere and the collision of two black holes. The optical appearance of a star which is collapsing through its gravitational radius to form a Schwarzschild (nonrotating) black hole is considered.
