A diurnal model of the mid-latitude ionospheric F-region is used to calculate the ionospheric structure over Millstone Hill (42.6 N, 71.5 W) on March 23-24, 1970. Ionospheric observations are used to specify boundary conditions for certain equations and to derive properties of the neutral atmosphere. A detailed photoelectron transport calculation is made at each time step to determine ionization rates, photoelectron spectra, and electron heating rates due to collisions with fast photoelectrons. Good agreement is obtained between calculated and observed diurnal ionospheric variations for this day if certain restrictions are placed on the solar EUV flux and neutral composition. Thus, Hinteregger's (1970) solar EUV flux measurements must be doubled and an atomic oxygen concentration of 10 to the 11th power per cu cm at 120 km must be maintained in the thermosphere during daytime.
