Data from the all-sky X-ray monitor aboard Ariel V were used to establish that a sudden transition had occurred in emissions from Cyg X-1 on April 22, 1975. Cyg X-1 has been observed almost continuously since around November 1, 1974, and has been relatively constant in apparent magnitude until the reported effect. The results of these observations are discussed.
