The accuracy of the Soviet AFU-75 camera in orbital determinations is analyzed using observations from cameras at Riga, Zvenigorod, and Ulan Bator to determine four orbits of the balloon satellite Explorer 19. The orbital parameters and standard deviations are presented, and the results are compared with those of U.S. Navy observations. The residuals for about half of the observations are found to be about 3 arcsec, but a substantial proportion of the observations are found to have residuals of the order of 20 arcsec. It is suggested that the larger residuals could result from errors in the orbital model due to solar radiation pressure effects, errors in station coordinates, angular errors in the observations, or some misinterpretation such as inconsistencies in timing systems.
