The large mass of a cluster of galaxies slows the Hubble expansion in a surrounding volume. The ratio of the matter density near the cluster to the average density at large distances grows as the cosmological density parameter Omega, decreases. When Omega is less than 0.2, the gravitational attraction of the Coma Cluster acting upon an initially homogeneous external medium is sufficient to account for a galaxy population comparable to that of the Coma Supercluster.
