Spectrophotometry of cataclysmic variable stars covering the wavelength range 0.32-1.1 micron is analyzed. The contributions due to the cool secondary star and the accretion disk are separated, subject to the requirement that the spectrum attributed to the accretion disk be 'physically plausible'. The results for individual stars, which are largely independent of specific disk models, are presented as limits on the absolute visual magnitude of the disk and its fractional contribution to the light at wavelength 5500. These limits are given as functions of the spectral type of the (often unseen) secondary star. The results of this study are broadly consistent with previous estimates of the average properties of various types of cataclysmic variables.
