Observations are presented for the radio continuum of the anomalous arms of the spiral galaxy NGC 4258 obtained with the Very Large Array and the Westerbook Synthesis Radio Telescope. Results show that the anomalous arms are part of a large complex of filamentary structures. The width of the radio emitting anomalous arms is approximately equal to that of the H-alpha filaments, implying a length to width ratio of the order of 100:1. Proposed mechanisms for the creation of these arms are critically reviewed in the light of the new data.
