Spitzer's method to calculate the charge of interstellar dust grains is extended to the case of an ensemble of dust particles. It is shown that the members of the ensemble do not possess a unique charge but show some distribution of the particles over the different possible charge states. The resulting equilibrium charge distribution due to collisions with charged particles and irradiation by photons is derived for different models. In the region of weak charges, significant differences between the mean charge of the particles and the charge predicted by Spitzer's theory occur. Numerical results are presented for dust grains imbedded into a H I-region. For non equilibrium problems the time of relaxation towards equilibrium is derived.
