This paper presents a review of our current knowledge of elliptical galaxies. It is shown that these systems, once considered to be rather simple objects, are presently believed to be extremely complicated systems, for which no explanation is yet available. A detailed study of the connections between early-type galaxies and their subcomponents is given: (1) classical subcomponents (bulge and disk), and (2) those of external origin, like dust-lanes, gas, shells and polar rings. The relationships between E and S0 galaxies are then discussed, including cD galaxies, early-type compact objects and the problem of the extreme limits of the luminosity function.
