Attention is given to the possibility of determining atomic oxygen concentrations on the basis of the emission rate ratio of N2's Second Positive bands and Vergard-Kaplan bands, with emphasis on the consequences of including a diffusive equilibrium requirement. At times, the oxygen concentration at 130 km altitude can be lower than that of the CIRA 72 model by a factor of 5, while at other times the concentration value may be in agreement with the model.
