Nonlinear mechanisms in the dynamos associated with the Sun and other lower main sequence stars are discussed using truncated model dynamo equations. The predicted relationships between rotation rate, field strength and cycle frequency are examined. The time series derived from these model equations is compared with time series from stochastic models. The model time-variations in shear are too large to be plausible if they occur over the whole convection zone; it may be, however, that dynamo action is principally confined to a layer at the base of the convection zone, in which case the model is more plausible.
