An analytical expression for the annealing of charged particle tracks in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial minerals as a function of time and temperature has been obtained by means of a semiempirical approach. The validity of this approach depends on the applicability of the Arrhenius equation to the process of annealing of nuclear tracks in solids. Laboratory studies confirm the predictive aspects of the approach, as well as the applicability of Arrhenius' equation to track annealing over a wide time-temperature range. This quantitative treatment may be useful in the in-depth study of various problems in meteoritics and earth sciences.
