Interest in studying the natural satellites in the solar system has increased greatly in recent years due to successful explorations of the moon, the development of new powerful research techniques in interferometry, radio astronomy, and radar astronomy, and the success of interplanetary probes such as Mariner 9 and 10 and Pioneer 10. Jupiter's satellite, Io, will probably be the most studied satellite in the next decade. Its interesting characteristics include the presence of an atmosphere, its high density, and its possible relationship to radio emissions from Jupiter. Saturn's satellite, Titan, will probably be the first satellite after the moon to be explored directly by spacecraft.
