The results of very-long-baseline-interferometer observations at 10.65 GHz and 10 months of flux-density measurements at 2.7 and 8.1 GHz of the compact radio source G74.87 + 1.22 are presented. The small-scale structure argues against the previous suggestion that the measured angular size is dominated by the effects of interstellar scattering. It has been suggested that the compact radio source is physically associated with the nearby supernova remnant G74.9 + 1.2. However, in view of H I absorption studies, radio and optical source morphology, flux-density variability, and the lack of any structural alignment with the SNR, it is proposed that G74.87 + 1.22 is an extragalactic radio source with no connection to the SNR.
